Language Arts

Please take a moment to browse our Language Arts gallery! Here you will see just a small sample of our engaging lessons, students working collaboratively and creatively, and learning through the use of technology within our classrooms. Some of these photos illustrate the variety of guest speakers that our students have had the opportunity to listen to and gain reading and writing inspiration from. Last school year, West Miami students read the new release (and soon to be studio film) Scythe! Author Neal Shusterman came by to give a book talk and take questions about the series. In previous years, students in our Book Club have attended sessions at the Miami Dade Book Fair. Some of the other authors they've heard from include Ridley Pearson and Raina Telgemeier. In addition, we have been fortunate enough to host authors Amy Ignatow and Peter Lerangis, Holocaust survivor David Mermelstein, and millionaire philanthropist & author Mike "Benito" Fernandez at our school. Here you can also see photos of our wonderful Hispanic Heritage Literacy Night! At West Miami, we understand the importance of reading and therefore strive to provide our students with meaningful literacy experiences!

Reading

The Reading Department's mission is to instruct students in the reading strategies that will help them meet M.D.C.P.S. reading proficiency requirements, as well as help them become critical readers of text across all disciplines. Knowing the text-based challenges awaiting students in High School, college and the workplace, our program offers a rigorous and research-based curriculum.

Experience the world in the classroom with authentic, multicultural literature and National Geographic informational texts. Students will become stronger readers with well-known authors and National Geographic Explorers.
  • Teach with new explorations and discovery
  • Engage students with National Geographic exclusive content
  • Achieve success with Common Core State Standards.
