M.E.T. Magnet

M.E.T. (Marine/Environmental Science/Technology)

West Miami Middle School’s M.E.T. Magnet features an accelerated curriculum in Environmental Science and Technology featuring Inquiry-Based Hands-On Learning. We offer programs rich in technology, service learning, and environmental action. Our prominent Environmental Technology program is the only one of its kind in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Through our partnership with scientists and community organizations such as Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Connect to Protect, Everglades National Park Education, Biscayne National Park Education, DERM, and Natural Areas Management, our program allows our students to improve our community while being educated on the importance of sustainable environmental practices and the latest in scientific technology.

West Miami Middle School features many opportunities for students to thrive. Gifted, Advanced, and Cambridge classes are provided in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. We are a Middle School Redesign Pilot School, which gives us the opportunity to offer over 15 electives, ranging from the arts such as Orchestra, Art, Film, and Culinary Arts, to science such as Forensics, Marine Biology, and our STEM Genius Lab. We are one of three schools in the state that were awarded the Perkins Innovation and Modernization Program (Perkins I&M) Grant in partnership with Lego Education, providing work-based learning, STEM career exploration, and mentorship opportunities for students and access to the Microsoft Technology Assistance industry certification in the 8th grade. We are also a Verizon Innovative Learning School, which affords every student with an iPad to take home for assignments and activities.

Student Created STEAM websites

ECOTEC Magnet students create STEAM based websites from their Botany Growth Experiments. They compared a variable, learn and performed science, used and made technology, videos, posted on Youtube, redirect websites to their student made Movie Maker videos, and even made Games for you to play. All while learning about food miles, healthy eating, and sustainable farming, botany and nature.

Check out our work from their student created websites:
